SRT vs VTT: What's the Difference?

SRT and VTT are the two most common subtitle formats. They look similar but have important differences. Here is when to use each.

SRT (SubRip)

SRT is the most widely supported subtitle format. Each entry has a number, a start and end timestamp, and the subtitle text. It works with YouTube, social platforms, most video editors and media players. If you only pick one format, SRT is the safest choice.

VTT (WebVTT)

VTT was designed for HTML5 video on the web. It uses a similar cue structure but supports positioning, styling and metadata, and it is the format browsers expect for the track element. Use VTT when embedding video on your own website.

Which should you use?

Use SRT for YouTube, editing and broad compatibility. Use VTT for web video. With Textera you do not have to choose, both are produced in a single conversion.
